What a good men's Feroza looks like

Feroza is turquoise, a soft, opaque stone that runs from sky blue to green. Most buyers in Pakistan look for an even sky blue, the colour long linked with Nishapur in Iran. Stones with a brown or black web of matrix are also natural, and some men prefer their rugged look; they usually cost less than clean blue stones. Greenish turquoise is generally priced lower again.

Much turquoise on the market is stabilised, which means resin has been pressed into the stone to harden it and hold its colour. That is an accepted treatment when it is disclosed, and we state it on every listing. What sets the ring price

The price of a Feroza ring is the stone plus the ring. Here are our current loose Feroza prices, built from our own listings and refreshed monthly.

Feroza is often quoted per ratti in Pakistan. The gem ratti is 0.91 carat; the jeweller's sunari ratti is about 0.61 carat. Ask which one a seller uses, or check with our carat to ratti converter. On the ring side, four things matter.

• Silver weight. Men's rings use a heavier shank than women's, and silver is priced by weight, so a bold band costs more than a slim one.
• Design. A plain bezel with a smooth band is the simplest. Patterned shoulders, a domed top or a pierced back add work.
• Handmade or cast. Cast rings come from moulds and are quicker to make. Handmade rings are shaped around your stone by a karigar and fit unusual shapes better.
• Protection for the stone. Feroza is soft, so we prefer a full bezel that wraps the edge over thin claws. It uses a little more silver and guards the stone against knocks.

Finger, hand and metal, as tradition has it

In Muslim tradition Feroza is usually worn in silver, often on the right hand, on the ring finger or the little finger. Many men choose silver because scholars commonly advise men against gold; ask a scholar you trust if you want a ruling. Persian and Central Asian traditions also link the stone with protection and safe travel. These are beliefs held by many families, not promises. Sizing a men's ring

Men's fingers vary more than people expect, and the knuckle is often wider than the base of the finger. The ring has to pass over the knuckle and still sit snugly. Measure with our ring size guide or follow how to measure your ring size at home. For a wide band, go half a size up.

Choosing the stone size

Most men's Feroza rings use a medium to large oval or cushion cabochon, big enough to show the colour from across a room. A broad hand carries a larger stone well; a slim hand looks better with a smaller one. Send a photo of your hand beside a coin on WhatsApp and we will suggest a size that sits in proportion.

2. Send the stone link and your ring size on WhatsApp. Add a photo of any design you like.
3. We confirm the design, the full price and the time needed on WhatsApp. We only start once you say yes.
4. The ring ships by insured tracked courier and takes about 7 working days to reach most of Pakistan.
5. You open the parcel, check the ring and pay the rider in cash.

Looking after a Feroza ring

Feroza is porous and soft, around 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. Oils, perfume, soap and hair products can slowly change its colour, which is why older untreated stones sometimes turn greenish. Take the ring off before washing dishes, applying cream or perfume, and for gym or manual work. Wipe it with a dry soft cloth; never soak it, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner. Keep it in its own pouch so harder stones cannot scratch it.
