Description

Dur-e-Najaf does not have a separate Urdu name, because Dur-e-Najaf is the name. In English the stone is clear quartz, also called rock crystal, a mineral that has been shaped into beads, seals and ornaments for a very long time, and still turns up in everything from tasbih strings to modern pendants. In Pakistani buying habits the Najaf name is the one that sells, and the stone is traditionally worn by believers in silver. That is custom and belief, nothing more.

This example weighs 17.25 carats, is transparent and colourless, and has a Mohs hardness of 7. The price is Rs. 3,230, about Rs. 187 per carat.

Clear quartz is not normally treated, though we always suggest asking. Message us on WhatsApp with GS-000214 and we will say what we know about this exact piece. Independent lab testing can be arranged on request. For other trade names, the Urdu and English names list is a handy reference, and the full range, from small pieces to large ones, is in the Dur-e-Najaf collection.

Pay Cash on Delivery once you have opened the parcel and seen the stone yourself, anywhere in Pakistan, with 7 days to return it if you change your mind. Before you choose, read our dur e najaf guide.

This particular stone

This listing is one natural dur-e-najaf with a weight of 17.25 Carat. Its price is Rs. 3,230 — roughly Rs. 187 for each carat. Origin: Pakistan. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GS-000214 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.

Above twelve carats you are into collector territory. Pieces this heavy are usually set as pendants or kept loose, and they are prized for the size of rough they came from. If you do set it, choose a bezel or a heavy claw to protect the edges.

On the Mohs scale dur-e-najaf rates 7. It handles daily wear, but a hard knock can still nick an exposed corner, so a protective setting is a sensible choice. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and keep it away from abrasive cleaners and high heat.

Whoever you buy dur-e-najaf from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every dur-e-najaf for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
