Description

Before buying lapis, ask what has been done to it. The usual answer in the trade is that dye is mostly found in cheap beads and carvings, wax or oil is sometimes applied to cut stones, and good-quality cabochons are less often altered. A reliable seller should explain this plainly, and a reliable buyer should insist on it.

For this 12.55 carat stone, the blue is strong and the weight sits comfortably in a ring bezel or a medium pendant. We can share what we know about it if you write on WhatsApp +92 308 887 3888 with GSN-LL-16. Independent lab testing can be arranged on request, and a certificate of authenticity is available.

Some quick checks for yourself: a wipe with a damp white cloth should not pick up blue, the polish should feel smooth to a fingernail, and the stone should look slightly uneven in colour, as natural lapis does, rather than flat. It costs Rs. 4,650, or about Rs. 371 per carat. Hardness is 5 to 6. Compare with others in lapis lazuli.

This particular stone

This listing is one natural lapis lazuli, known in Urdu as Lajward, with a weight of 12.55 Carat. Its price is Rs. 4,650 — roughly Rs. 371 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GSN-LL-16 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.

Above twelve carats you are into collector territory. Pieces this heavy are usually set as pendants or kept loose, and they are prized for the size of rough they came from. If you do set it, choose a bezel or a heavy claw to protect the edges.

On the Mohs scale lapis lazuli rates 5 to 6. That makes it soft for a gemstone, better suited to pendants, earrings and rings for special occasions than to a daily ring. Keep it away from perfume, cleaning products, steam and ultrasonic cleaners, and polish it with a dry, soft cloth after wear.

Whoever you buy lapis lazuli from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every lapis lazuli for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.

Questions about this stone

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Has this lapis lazuli been dyed?

No. Dyeing is the most common treatment in lapis and is used to push pale, calcite-heavy material towards royal blue, but it is far less common in cut cabochons of this grade. You can check it yourself: a cotton bud lightly moistened with acetone will lift colour from dyed material and stain blue, while natural colour does not move. We also do not wax or oil the stones we sell.

What are the gold flecks in the stone?

Pyrite. Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral — the blue is lazurite, the gold is pyrite and any white is calcite. The pyrite is useful evidence of authenticity, because the dyed jasper and reconstituted blocks sold as lapis do not contain it.

Can a 12.55 carat lapis be worn in a ring?

Yes, with some care. At 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale lapis is soft for daily ring wear, so ask for a bezel that stands slightly proud of the stone to take the knocks, and take the ring off for washing up and housework.

How do I tell lapis from sodalite or dyed jasper?

Sodalite is a greyer, more violet blue, carries white veining rather than gold, and never shows pyrite. Dyed jasper, sold as Swiss or German lapis, has a flat uniform colour with none of the natural mottling real lapis carries. Every stone we list is hand-inspected, and with Cash on Delivery you can have it checked locally before you pay.
