People who write to us about a stone this size usually have the same few questions, so here are answers for this 17.4 carat moonstone from Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The body is milky white with a bluish adularescence, and the price is Rs. 11,630, or about Rs. 668 per carat. Its reference is GS-000415.

What does the per-carat figure tell me?

It is the price divided by the weight, so you can compare this stone fairly with smaller or larger moonstones.

Will it show the glow in a dim room?

Moonstone prefers a diffused, bright light over a dark corner. In soft daylight or under a lamp the blue sheen is easier to see, and the translucent body helps the light travel through.

Can I have it tested?

Yes, an independent lab can test it if you ask, and a certificate of authenticity is available on request. Moonstone rarely receives treatment, and WhatsApp is the place to ask about this exact stone.

Cash on Delivery is available across Pakistan, so you inspect the stone before paying, and returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery. Before you choose, read our moonstone guide.

Above twelve carats you are into collector territory. Pieces this heavy are usually set as pendants or kept loose, and they are prized for the size of rough they came from. If you do set it, choose a bezel or a heavy claw to protect the edges.

On the Mohs scale moonstone rates 6 to 6.5. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.
