Description
Opals are bought for movement, so before anything else, ask what you want that movement to do. At 1.2 carats this stone is small enough to sit quietly in a ring yet large enough for the colour flashes to be seen across a table.
Is it priced fairly for its size?
The price is Rs. 3,000, about Rs. 2,500 per carat. That per-carat figure is useful when you compare it with other opals on the page, because opals of different weights and colour quality are rarely priced in a straight line.
Can I wear it every day?
With care, yes, though opal measures 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and is easily scratched by dust and everyday knocks. A pendant or earring is gentler on it than a ring worn at the workbench. Avoid heat and sudden temperature changes, and keep it away from harsh cleaners.
Is this opal treated?
Whole opal is normally sold as found, but darkened stones and glued doublets turn up in the trade. We stock solid natural opal. Message us on WhatsApp with the reference GS-000585 and we will say what we know about it, or arrange independent testing if you ask.
Other sizes are in the opal category.

This particular stone
This listing is one natural opal with a weight of 1.2 Carat. Its price is Rs. 3,000 — roughly Rs. 2,500 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GS-000585 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.
Under two carats, a stone like this sits neatly in a slim ring, a stud or a delicate pendant and does not snag on sleeves. It is also where many first-time buyers begin when a stone is recommended for astrological reasons, because the total cost stays modest.
On the Mohs scale opal rates 5.5 to 6.5. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.
Whoever you buy opal from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every opal for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
