Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
April's birthstone is the diamond (heera in Urdu). Let's be clear from the start: GemStore does not sell diamonds. We deal in natural coloured gemstones, and diamond is a separate trade with its own grading, paperwork and supply. So this page does two things - it gives you honest pointers if you buy a diamond elsewhere, and it shows the natural colourless stones we do carry for an April birthday.
Two colourless stones we do offer
Dur-e-Najaf
For many families in Pakistan, the first answer to "a clear stone for a ring" is Dur-e-Najaf: naturally colourless quartz, traditionally associated with Najaf in Iraq and especially valued in Shia tradition. It is 7 on the Mohs scale, so it handles daily ring wear. Look for a clean, water-clear stone with good polish. Browse Dur-e-Najaf.
White (colourless) topaz
Colourless topaz is harder, at 8 on the Mohs scale, and has more brilliance than quartz, so a well-cut stone looks livelier. It does have a cleavage direction, so a protective setting is wise. See our topaz collection, which also includes coloured topaz.
Neither stone is a "fake diamond", and we never sell them as one. They are genuine gemstones in their own right that happen to be colourless - which is often exactly what someone wants when they ask for an April stone without a diamond budget.
If you are buying a diamond elsewhere
Diamond is graded on carat, colour, clarity and cut, and grading is far more standardised than for coloured stones. Two habits protect you:
- Get an independent laboratory report from a recognised grading lab, ideally with the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle so the stone can be matched to the paper. A seller's in-house card is not the same thing.
- Ask in plain words whether the stone is natural or lab-grown. Lab-grown diamond is chemically identical to mined diamond and a legitimate purchase, but it is worth much less and must be disclosed. This is where most buyers are caught out.
Simulants: what we refuse to stock
Cubic zirconia, moissanite and glass are all used to imitate diamond. We do not stock any simulant presented as something it is not. Every stone on GemStore is mined, not made, and known treatments are disclosed - which is why this page is advice rather than a diamond listing.
Caring for a colourless stone
Clear stones show dirt more than coloured ones, and a film of soap or lotion quickly dulls their sparkle. Clean Dur-e-Najaf or topaz with warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse well and dry with a lint-free cloth. Store them apart from harder stones to avoid scratches, and remember that topaz can split if knocked hard at the wrong angle.
Gift ideas for April
A Dur-e-Najaf ring is a traditional, meaningful present in many Pakistani families, often given to men. A colourless topaz pendant or pair of studs offers sparkle for everyday wear. If the person really wants a diamond, the advice above will help you shop safely elsewhere.
April and the rashi tradition
The April-diamond link comes from the Western calendar list. In the Vedic navaratna, diamond is associated with Venus (Shukra) and is chosen from a person's chart, not their birth month - so an April birthday does not on its own call for a diamond.
