Kunzite authenticity, step by step

Kunzite's Colour Shift and Weight: Separating It From Look-Alikes

In short: Kunzite can be told from look-alikes by its strong colour shift, changing from violet-pink to paler pink or almost colourless as you turn it, which glass never shows. It also feels noticeably lighter than pink topaz of the same size, shows needle-like tubes or growth lines rather than bubbles, and is rarely a vivid hot pink.

Kunzite is the pink to lilac variety of the mineral spodumene, and the mountains of Afghanistan and northern Pakistan are well-known sources of fine crystals. Its soft, glowing pink is easy to admire and, for the same reason, easy to imitate with pink topaz, glass or synthetics. Kunzite has a few distinctive habits, though, and they make it easier to identify than many pink stones.

Clue 1: colour that changes with direction

Kunzite is strongly pleochroic, meaning it shows different colours when viewed along different directions of the crystal. Turn a loose stone and you may see it shift from deeper violet-pink to paler pink or almost colourless. Cutters orient the best colour to face up, but a hint of this shift is often visible from the side. Glass shows no such change.

Clue 2: weight in the hand

Kunzite is noticeably lighter than topaz of the same size. If you have two similarly sized pink stones and one feels clearly heavier, that one is more likely to be topaz.

Clue 3: natural inclusions

Under a loupe kunzite may show fine, needle-like tubes or growth lines running in one direction. Glass imitations tend to show round bubbles and swirl marks instead.

Clue 4: the price

Large, clean, deeply coloured kunzite is still relatively affordable compared with pink sapphire, so be suspicious of stones described as "pink sapphire" at a kunzite price, and of "kunzite" that is a vivid hot pink, which may be synthetic or dyed glass.

Irradiated and heated kunzite

Some kunzite is irradiated and heated to deepen or stabilise its colour. Ask whether the stone has been treated; we disclose this where known, and lab testing can be arranged if you want certainty.

The things kunzite does not like

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale kunzite resists scratching, but it has perfect cleavage in two directions, meaning it can split along flat planes from a sharp knock. It is also known to fade with long exposure to strong light. In practice:

  • favour pendants and earrings, or a well-protected ring worn for occasions;
  • store it in a dark box rather than on display in sunlight;
  • clean with lukewarm soapy water only, never ultrasonic or steam.

Kunzite and Shukra

In South Asian practice kunzite is linked to Venus (Shukra) and is worn for compassion and calm. These are traditional beliefs, not promised outcomes; see our rashi guide.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Does kunzite fade?

It can fade with long exposure to strong light, so store it in a dark box and wear it mainly in the evening or for occasions.

How do I tell kunzite from pink topaz?

Kunzite is lighter for its size and shows a strong change of colour with viewing direction. A lab test gives a definite answer.

Is kunzite fragile?

It resists scratching, but its perfect cleavage means a sharp knock can split it. Protective settings help.

Is kunzite found in Pakistan?

Yes. Northern Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan are well-known sources of kunzite crystals.
