Short answer: kunzite is one of the more affordable pink gems, and its price depends above all on colour depth. A stone with a clear, saturated pink to violet-pink costs several times more per carat than a pale one of the same size, and because kunzite's colour gets stronger as stones get bigger, size and colour push the price up together. Clarity is expected to be good, so visible flaws bring the price down sharply.
The table below is built from GemStore's own kunzite listings and refreshed monthly. It shows the lowest, typical and highest price per stone, and per carat and per ratti. Around it we explain what moves the price, how bazaar per-ratti quotes work and how to compare two offers fairly. If you are worried about look-alikes first, read separating kunzite from look-alikes.
Kunzite prices from our listings
| Weight | Weights | Stones | Per carat | Per ratti |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 – 6 carat | 3.5 – 4.7 ct | 5 | Rs 1,100 – Rs 1,150 | Rs 1,000 – Rs 1,050 |
| 6 – 10 carat | 7.0 – 9.7 ct | 2 | Rs 1,150 – Rs 1,150 | Rs 1,050 – Rs 1,050 |
| Over 10 carat | 10.0 – 17.4 ct | 5 | Rs 260 – Rs 1,150 | Rs 240 – Rs 1,050 |
These figures come from the natural kunzite stones in our kunzite collection, each photographed and priced individually. They are a guide to the spread, not a fixed rate. Two stones of the same weight can sit at opposite ends of the table because of colour alone. For other stones, see the monthly gemstone price guide.
What kunzite is
Kunzite is the pink to lilac variety of spodumene, a lithium mineral, about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Much of the kunzite in the Pakistani trade comes from Afghanistan and reaches the market through Peshawar; Brazil and Madagascar are other well-known sources. It forms large, clean crystals, which is why it is often cut into big stones that would be unaffordable in pink sapphire or spinel.
It has two quirks that affect price: strong pleochroism (the colour changes with viewing direction) and a tendency to fade in strong light. Both come up again below.
The six things that set the price
1. Colour depth
This is the main factor. Kunzite ranges from almost colourless to a rich hot pink or violet-pink. The more saturated the colour, the higher the price, and the step-up is steep. Pale "baby pink" stones are the most common and the least costly. A pure pink without brown or grey is worth more than a dull or brownish one. Some buyers prefer the cooler lilac tones, which can be priced similarly to pink of the same depth.
2. Size
Kunzite's colour is weak in small stones and builds with depth, so a stone of two or three carats may look pale while a ten-carat stone from the same crystal looks clearly pink. As a result, per-carat prices tend to rise with size for well-coloured material. Compare the 3.50-carat kunzite with the 10.05-carat kunzite in our listings to see how size affects both the colour you see and the price.
3. Clarity
Kunzite is usually eye-clean, and buyers expect it to be. Visible needles, cracks or cloudy areas reduce the price much more than they would for ruby or emerald, where some inclusions are normal. A good kunzite should look like clear pink water.
4. Cut and orientation
Because the colour is strongest when you look down the length of the crystal, a skilled cutter places the table at right angles to that direction. A well-oriented stone looks pink from the top; a badly oriented one looks pale or nearly colourless face-up even though the side looks pink. Good cutting therefore costs more weight from the rough and adds to the price. Kunzite also has two directions of perfect cleavage, so careful cutting and polishing take time. Check face-up colour, not side colour, when comparing.
5. Treatment
Some kunzite is irradiated, sometimes followed by heating, to deepen or change its colour. Irradiated colour may fade faster. Untreated stones of good colour command more. Ask the seller directly and expect disclosure; GemStore discloses known treatments on every listing.
6. Origin
Origin matters less for kunzite than for sapphire or emerald. Afghan material has a strong reputation for size and colour, and some buyers pay a little more for it. A stated origin is not a substitute for judging colour with your own eyes.
Fading and why it affects value
Kunzite can lose colour if it is exposed to strong sunlight for long periods, which is why it is sometimes called an "evening stone". This matters for price in two ways. First, a stone that has sat in a sunny shop window may already be paler than it was. Second, buyers who plan daily outdoor wear may not want to pay top rates. Store kunzite in a dark pouch, wear it for evenings and occasions, and it will keep its colour for many years.
How per-ratti pricing works in Pakistani bazaars
Many sellers in Pakistan quote coloured stones per ratti instead of per carat. The standard gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat (about 0.182 g). The jeweller's sunari ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat. So:
- To turn a per-carat price into a per-ratti price, multiply it by 0.91.
- To find a stone's weight in gem ratti, divide its carat weight by 0.91. A 5.46-carat kunzite is 6 ratti.
- If a seller uses the sunari ratti, the same stone counts as about 9 ratti, and a per-ratti quote means something quite different.
Always ask which ratti is being used. The carat to ratti converter does the arithmetic for you.
How to compare two quotes fairly
- Convert both to the same unit, per carat or per gem ratti.
- Compare stones of similar size. A per-carat rate for a three-carat stone cannot be compared with one for a fifteen-carat stone.
- Compare face-up colour in daylight, side by side or in photos taken under the same light. Shop lighting often makes pink look stronger.
- Ask about treatment. An irradiated stone should cost less than an untreated one of the same colour.
- Check clarity with a loupe. A cheaper stone with a visible crack is not a bargain.
- Confirm identity. Pink glass, synthetic spinel and pale pink topaz are sometimes sold as kunzite. A certificate is available from us on request, and lab-tested stones are listed under lab-certified kunzite.
- Factor in the returns policy. A slightly higher price with inspection on delivery and a 7-day return is often better value than a cheaper stone you cannot send back.
Budget tiers: what to look for
You can browse GemStore by budget with our price filters. Here is how kunzite generally fits each tier.
- Under 5,000 rupees: mostly smaller or paler stones. Good for a first pink stone or a light everyday pendant.
- 5,000 to 20,000 rupees: larger stones with a visible pink, the range most buyers choose for a ring.
- 20,000 to 50,000 rupees: bigger, well-cut stones with stronger colour and clean clarity.
- Over 50,000 rupees: large stones with deep, even colour, suited to a statement piece.
These are tendencies, not promises: which stones fall in each tier depends on our listings at the time, and a tier may sometimes hold no kunzite at all. The table above reflects what is listed.
Loose stone or finished ring: what adds to the cost
A quote for a kunzite ring bundles several costs together, so compare it with care. The stone is one part. The metal is another, priced by weight and purity, and a silver ring costs far less than a gold one. Making charges vary by karigar and by design, and a delicate setting for a large kunzite takes more work, because the stone's cleavage means the jeweller must avoid pressure and heat. Ask for the stone's weight and price separately from the ring. If a seller will not split them, it is hard to know what you are paying for the kunzite itself.
Buying the stone loose and having it set afterwards is often clearer. Our stone setting service explains how that works, and silver vs gold ring settings helps with the choice of metal. A bezel or protective claws suit kunzite best.
Kunzite against other pink stones
If your budget is fixed, it helps to know the alternatives. Kunzite gives the largest clean pink stone for the money among faceted gems. Pink topaz, including the famous material from Katlang in Pakistan, is harder and does not fade, but natural pink topaz in good colour is scarce; see Katlang pink topaz. Rose quartz is far cheaper and usually cloudy, better as beads or cabochons. Spinel is tougher and brighter but costs considerably more per carat for a similar size.
Kunzite in tradition
In Vedic astrology kunzite is sometimes suggested as a substitute stone for Venus (Shukra), in place of diamond, and in modern crystal traditions it is associated with love and calm. These are beliefs, not promises, and they do not change what a stone is worth. If you are buying for astrological reasons, many astrologers prefer an untreated stone.
