Black agate is one of the most affordable stones you can buy, which makes it a good first purchase and also a place where small details decide whether you are happy with it. Here is what a first-time buyer actually needs to know, starting with the fact most sellers leave out.
The honest truth: most black agate is dyed
Solid, jet-black agate is rare in nature. Most of the black agate and "black onyx" in the world trade is grey or banded chalcedony that has been colour-treated, traditionally with a sugar-and-acid process that carbonises inside the stone's pores. The result is permanent and does not rub off, and the trade has accepted it for centuries. It is still natural agate; only the colour is enhanced. What matters is that the seller tells you, and that the price reflects it.
Glass and plastic imitations
Black glass is the real substitute to watch for. Clues:
- round gas bubbles or swirl lines under a loupe or phone macro lens;
- a cold feel that warms up very quickly in your hand;
- moulded, slightly soft edges where a cut stone would have crisp facets or a smooth, even dome;
- a weight that feels wrong, either too light (plastic) or oddly heavy.
What separates a good stone from a plain one
Depth of black
Hold it under a bright light. Better stones look deep and even; lesser ones show brownish or greyish patches near the edges.
Polish
A good polish gives a mirror-like reflection. A hazy, orange-peel surface means the stone was finished quickly.
Shape and proportions
For rings, an even oval or cushion cabochon with a smooth base sits better in a setting than a lopsided one. Check the photograph from the side if one is available.
How it wears
As a variety of chalcedony black agate sits around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it suits a daily ring. Wipe it with a damp cloth and keep it apart from harder gems in storage.
Three things to confirm
- Natural agate, not glass.
- Any dyeing or colour treatment stated in writing.
- The weight is the weight of the stone, not the setting.
