Red Gemstones سرخ
In short: Our natural red gemstones are Yaqoot (ruby), Marjan (red coral), garnet and red agate (surkh Aqeeq). Ruby and garnet are transparent and usually faceted, while coral and red agate are opaque or translucent and cut smooth. Ruby is far harder at 9 on the Mohs scale, while coral is soft and organic.

The red stones and how they differ
| Stone | Hardness (Mohs) | Look | Typical treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yaqoot | 9 | Pinkish to deep red, glows under light | Heating common; glass filling in some |
| Garnet | 6.5–7.5 | Deeper, often brownish or wine red | Rarely treated |
| Marjan | 3–4 | Opaque orange-red to blood red, organic | Sometimes dyed or filled |
| Red agate | 6.5–7 | Translucent orange-red, waxy shine | Often heated or dyed |
How to tell ruby from garnet
Ruby usually shows a purer red with pink or purple hints and a strong glow in daylight. Garnet tends to look darker and more brownish, and it is singly refractive, which a gem lab can confirm in minutes.
What to check
- Ruby: ask whether it is heated or glass-filled. Filled rubies need gentle care and are valued much lower; we disclose both.
- Marjan: look for natural growth lines; very uniform colour and a plastic feel suggest dye or imitation.
- Red agate: hold to light; natural colour is often slightly uneven.

What drives value in red stones
For ruby, a strong, pure red with a glow and few visible inclusions is worth most, and unheated stones carry a premium. Garnet is valued for a bright red that is not too dark. For coral, an even deep red without cracks or holes counts most, and for red agate, a clear, translucent glow.
