What the lab checks on Pukhraj
- Identification: separating yellow sapphire from yellow topaz, citrine and glass, which are often sold as Pukhraj.
- Heating: very common in yellow sapphire, detected from inclusions and instrument readings.
- Beryllium diffusion: used to turn pale stones a strong yellow or orange; it needs advanced testing to detect.
- Synthetics: flame-fusion yellow corundum shows curved growth lines under magnification.
