Natural Hessonite (Gomed) Stone in Pakistan
Hessonite, known as Gomed in Urdu and Hindi, is a honey to cinnamon-brown variety of grossular garnet. In Vedic astrology it is traditionally the stone of Rahu. Each Gomed here is a single natural stone, photographed as it is and priced on its own. Most good hessonite comes from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and East Africa.

What hessonite is
Hessonite is calcium-aluminium garnet (grossular) coloured by small amounts of iron and manganese. Its colour runs from golden honey through orange to deep cinnamon and reddish brown. It rates about 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for a ring that is worn with some care. Because it belongs to the garnet family, you can compare it with red stones in our garnet collection.
Ceylon and African Gomed
Sri Lankan hessonite has long been the reference in South Asia, often in clear honey and orange tones. Hessonite from Tanzania, Kenya and Madagascar tends to come in deeper cinnamon to reddish shades. Origin alone does not decide quality; colour, clarity and cut matter more. When we know a stone's origin, the listing says so.
How to choose a good Gomed
- Colour: a warm, even honey or cinnamon colour that stays lively indoors is preferred. Very dark, muddy stones are less valued.
- Clarity: hessonite almost always shows a swirly, "treacly" look inside under a loupe, like oil stirred into honey. This is normal and helps prove the stone is natural.
- Cut: a well-proportioned stone returns light; a badly cut one looks dull or has a dark centre.
- Size: larger clean stones cost more per carat.
How to spot glass sold as Gomed
Orange-brown glass is a common imitation. Glass often shows round gas bubbles and swirl lines that look different from hessonite's grainy, wavy texture. It warms quickly in the hand, while garnet stays cool for longer. Glass also chips easily at the facet edges. Some "Gomed" is also confused with citrine or brownish topaz, which are different minerals. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged. Gomed in Vedic astrology
In Vedic astrology, Gomed is the gem of Rahu, one of the nine planets (navagraha). It is traditionally worn on the middle finger in silver or panchdhatu, and families who follow this custom usually consult an astrologer before wearing it. Rahu is sometimes paired with cat's eye (Lehsunia) for Ketu. These are traditions and beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes. See gemstones and the planets.
