Navagraha Stones: The Nine Planetary Gemstones نو گرہ کے پتھر
In short: Vedic astrology traditionally gives each of the nine planets one gem: ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, red coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, blue sapphire for Saturn, hessonite (Gomed) for Rahu and cat's eye (Lehsunia) for Ketu. Together these nine are called the navaratna.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
The nine planets and their stones
Jyotish works with nine planetary influences, the navagraha: the Sun, the Moon, the five visible planets, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each has one primary gem, and together the nine are called the navaratna.

The seven planets
Sun, Moon and Mars
Ruby belongs to the Sun, traditionally linked with authority and confidence; its usual substitute is red garnet. Pearl belongs to the Moon, linked with the mind and calm, with moonstone as the substitute. Red coral belongs to Mars, linked with energy and courage, with red agate (carnelian) as the substitute.
Mercury and Jupiter
Emerald is Mercury's stone, linked with intellect, speech and trade; peridot is the substitute. Yellow sapphire is Jupiter's stone, linked with wisdom and prosperity; citrine and yellow topaz are the substitutes.
Venus: we do not sell diamonds
Diamond is the classical gem of Venus. GemStore does not sell diamonds. Tradition accepts white sapphire, white zircon and opal in its place, and many families wear white topaz. Ask us on WhatsApp for white sapphire, or browse white topaz and opal.
Saturn
Blue sapphire (Neelam) is Saturn's stone and the one tradition treats with most caution. Amethyst and lapis lazuli are the gentler substitutes.
Rahu and Ketu
Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. They rule no sign, so their stones are given only from a chart reading. Rahu's stone is hessonite garnet, known locally as Gomed, with an orange-brown honey colour; see our hessonite category. Ketu's stone is cat's eye (Lehsunia), a chrysoberyl with a sharp line of light across it; see cat's eye and our guide Lehsunia grading. Tiger eye is named as a Ketu substitute.
Choosing by planet
A planet's stone is traditionally worn to strengthen that planet when it is favourable in your chart. That is why astrologers look at the ascendant, the current dasha and which planets are weak before naming a stone, and why two people with the same sign may be given different gems. Certain pairs are usually kept apart, such as Neelam with ruby or red coral, and Pukhraj with Venus stones. If you only know your sign, start from the zodiac gemstones hub; for the full background, read gemstones by rashi.
Buying a planetary stone
The tradition asks for a natural stone, ideally untreated, of a weight set by the astrologer. Ask us for the treatment status of any stone, and for independent lab testing on a costly one. Read how we check every gemstone. Prices depend on colour, clarity, treatment, origin and size; the budget filters in the shop help you compare.
