Moss agate, known in Pakistan as shajri aqeeq, is translucent chalcedony with mineral growths inside that look like moss, ferns or tiny trees. Two stones of the same weight can be priced very differently, and the difference is almost always in the picture inside the stone, not the carats. This guide shows you how to judge that picture yourself.
The picture is the product
The trade looks at four things when it grades moss agate:
- The background: the chalcedony should be clear to softly milky. Cloudy, grey or cracked backgrounds bury the pattern.
- The growth itself: crisp, well-defined branches in green, brown or black score higher than vague smudges. Tree-like scenes with a sense of depth are especially prized.
- Composition: a pattern that fills the stone in a balanced way, without a big empty patch or a crowded corner, looks better set.
- Contrast: the moss should stand out clearly against the background when you hold the stone to the light.
How the cutter can help or hurt
Moss agate is nearly always cut as a cabochon or flat slab. A good cutter positions the best part of the pattern in the centre of the dome and keeps the stone thin enough for light to pass through. Check that the outline is symmetrical, the polish is glassy and there are no undercut dips or chips around the girdle.
Is the pattern natural?
Painted surfaces and resin-filled agate are the main imitations. Natural moss is irregular, never repeats exactly and sits inside the stone at different depths. Paint lies on the surface and can show brush-like strokes; resin fills show soft, slightly sunken patches under a loupe. Get the seller to confirm in writing that the stone is natural and whether anything has been done to it.
Wear and durability
At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale moss agate handles daily ring wear well. A sharp blow on a thin edge can chip it, so a bezel setting is a sensible choice for a ring you wear all the time.
Price
Because the pattern drives value, we price each moss agate individually rather than by a single category rate.
Tradition
Aqeeq has a long history across the Islamic world, and shajri aqeeq in particular is traditionally worn for grounding and steady growth. We present this as belief, not a promise. If you are buying for astrological reasons, agree the weight, metal and finger with your astrologer first; our rashi guide shows the usual pairings.
Final checks before paying
Confirm the stone is natural, that any treatment is disclosed in writing, and that the weight is for the cut stone. We inspect every stone and photograph each one alone, so you can judge its pattern from the listing. Browse moss agate, or see red coral and yellow sapphire. Our Urdu-English gem names page covers local names, and Cash on Delivery reaches Lahore, Karachi and every other city.
