Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
Nephrite is one of the two minerals sold as jade, and people often buy it for meaning as much as for looks. Before you think about what it may do for you, it helps to know what it is, why it has been carved and treasured for thousands of years, and how to make sure the piece in your hand is nephrite and not a cheaper look-alike.
Why nephrite has been prized so long
Nephrite is made of tightly interlocking mineral fibres. That structure makes it exceptionally tough: it resists breaking far better than many harder gems, which is why it has been carved into tools, cups and ornaments across China, Central Asia and the Mughal courts. Its hardness is around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so it can pick up scratches, but it is very hard to chip or crack.
What the traditions say
In Chinese culture jade has long stood for virtue, calm and protection, and it is often given to mark important life events. In the wider Islamic and South Asian world carved jade was valued by rulers and collectors, and the stone is still worn for steadiness and peace of mind. These are cultural and spiritual beliefs. We do not promise health, wealth or other results from wearing it.
Practical questions before you buy
Weight and size
There is no single correct weight. If you are following an astrologer's advice, get the recommended weight from them and choose a stone close to it. If you are buying for meaning, pick a size that suits how you will wear it.
Metal and finger
Silver is a common choice for nephrite rings in Pakistan, but practitioners differ on metal and finger, so settle both before the ring is made. Our rashi guide explains the usual pairings.
Nephrite or serpentine?
Serpentine is the stone most often sold as jade. Real nephrite takes a soft, waxy-to-oily polish and feels dense and solid. Serpentine is softer and lighter, can sometimes be scratched where nephrite would not be, and often looks slightly soapy or greasy. A stone that is perfectly even, flawless and cheap at once deserves suspicion. Ask for the material and any treatment to be written on the invoice.
How nephrite is priced
Colour is the main driver, with even, rich green at the top. Translucency, a smooth fine texture and freedom from dark spots and cracks follow. We price each stone separately.
Confirm before you pay
Check that the stone is natural nephrite, that any treatment is written down and that the weight is the cut stone's. We inspect every stone against those points and photograph each one alone. Browse our nephrite, or compare ruby and amber. Urdu and English names are on our gem names page, and Cash on Delivery reaches Lahore, Karachi and every other city.
