Being sourced now
We do not have pink topaz listed yet. We are sourcing natural stones and will add each one individually, with its own photos, once it passes our checks. Send a message on WhatsApp at +92 308 887 3888 with the colour, size or shape you want, and we will contact you when a suitable stone comes in. You can also email cod@gemstore.pk or use our contact page. Meanwhile, the Katlang topaz in our topaz and yellow topaz collections is yellow to golden, not pink.
What pink topaz is
Topaz is an aluminium silicate containing fluorine. It rates 8 on the Mohs scale, has a slippery, glassy lustre and feels heavy for its size. It also has perfect cleavage, so a hard knock in the wrong direction can split it cleanly. Natural pink in topaz comes from traces of chromium, the same element that colours ruby, and stones with strong natural pink are scarce worldwide.
Katlang, in Mardan district, is the best-known Pakistani source. Topaz there grows in veins in the local rock, in shades of pink, violet-pink, peach and sherry as well as yellow and golden. Read more in Katlang pink topaz, gemstones in Mardan and the gemstone mines of Pakistan.
Colours and varieties
- Pale pink: soft, light pink, the shade most often found.
- Violet-pink: a cooler pink with a purple tint, highly prized.
- Peach and sherry: warm pink-orange tones; strongly coloured orange-pink topaz is often called imperial topaz in the trade.
- Yellow and golden: the Katlang colours we currently list, under yellow topaz.
Natural, heated or coated?
Three quite different things are sold as pink topaz:
- Natural pink: the colour formed in the ground. Rare and the most valued.
- Heated pink: some yellow, orange or sherry topaz containing chromium turns pink when gently heated, because the yellow component fades. The result is stable, and heating is an accepted practice that should be disclosed.
- Coated pink: colourless topaz with a thin surface coating. It is very common and cheap, the colour sits only on the surface, and it can wear away at facet edges.
To spot coating, look at the facet edges with a loupe: worn spots may show colourless topaz beneath, and the surface may have a faint rainbow sheen. Telling natural from heated pink needs a lab, and even then it is not always possible.
Look-alikes and imitations
Pink glass and synthetic pink spinel or corundum are sold as pink topaz. Natural pink stones can also be confused with it, including kunzite, pink tourmaline, morganite and rose quartz. Topaz feels slippery and heavy for its size and is doubly refractive; glass warms quickly and may show bubbles. A lab separates them reliably. See checking a gemstone before you buy.
What drives value
Colour is the main factor: a saturated pink or violet-pink is worth far more than a pale or brownish one. Natural colour, confirmed by a lab, sits above heated colour, and coated stones are an inexpensive product of their own. Topaz is usually clean, so eye-visible inclusions lower value. Size matters, because clean pink stones over a few carats are hard to find. A good cut shows colour evenly, and documented Katlang origin adds interest for Pakistani buyers and collectors.
Bazaar quotes for topaz may be per carat or per ratti; the gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat. Use the carat to ratti converter and the gemstone price guide to compare offers.
Questions to ask before buying
When you are offered pink topaz, ask three things: is the colour natural, heated or coated; where was the stone mined; and will the seller put both answers in writing. Clear answers to all three are a good sign. Vague replies, or a strong pink at a surprisingly low price, usually point to a coated stone. With Katlang material, colour can also vary within one crystal, so check the stone from several angles and in daylight.
Care
Because of its perfect cleavage, protect topaz from knocks and choose a setting that guards the stone. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners and sudden temperature changes. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush; for coated stones, avoid abrasive cloths and harsh chemicals. Read topaz is hard, not unbreakable.
Topaz in tradition
Topaz is a November birthstone; see November birthstones and November's topaz and citrine. In some South Asian practice, yellow topaz is traditionally offered as a substitute for Pukhraj (yellow sapphire) and linked with Jupiter, while pink stones are often given as gifts of affection. These are beliefs and customs, not promised outcomes; speak to an astrologer or scholar you trust if this matters to you.
