What rose quartz is
Rose quartz is the same mineral as clear Billaur and purple amethyst (Jamunia): silicon dioxide, rated 7 on the Mohs scale. Most rose quartz grows as massive rock rather than as clear, pointed crystals. Its pink colour comes from microscopic fibres of a pink mineral spread through the quartz, and those same fibres scatter light, which gives the typical hazy, milky look. Brazil and Madagascar are major sources, and pink quartz turns up in many pegmatite regions.
Shades and varieties
- Pale blush: the most common, a light pink that shows best in larger beads and carvings.
- Medium rose: a clear, even pink, preferred for cabochons and rings.
- Translucent, facet-grade: clearer material is scarcer and can be faceted for a soft sparkle.
- Star rose quartz: some stones show a six-rayed star under a single light when cut as a cabochon, a natural effect called asterism.
- Crystallised pink quartz: small, transparent pink crystals, a rare collector material distinct from massive rose quartz.
How to tell real rose quartz from dyed quartz and glass
A strong bubblegum or neon pink is a warning sign. Common imitations include:
- Dyed quartz or quartzite: colour gathers in cracks and around drill holes in beads, and the pink may look patchy under a torch.
- Pink glass: may show round bubbles or swirl lines, warms quickly in the hand and often looks too even.
- "Cherry quartz": a trade name for coloured glass with streaks, not quartz at all.
- Resin or plastic beads: light in the hand, warm to the touch and easily scratched.
Natural rose quartz has a soft, slightly uneven colour, feels cool and shows a glassy lustre on polished faces. A lab can confirm quartz quickly. See checking a gemstone before you buy.
Treatments
Most rose quartz is untreated. Some beads are dyed to deepen the pink, and some low-grade material is impregnated with resin to hide cracks. When we list rose quartz, any known treatment will be disclosed on the listing.
What drives value
Colour comes first: a clear, saturated medium pink is preferred over very pale or greyish stones. Transparency follows, because clearer material is rarer. Cut and polish matter for cabochons, where a smooth dome and good symmetry show the colour best; for beads, matching colour along the strand counts. A strong, centred star adds value in star rose quartz. Size matters less than with rarer gems, since rose quartz is found in large pieces.

Care
Rose quartz can fade if left in strong sunlight for long periods, so store it away from windows. It is hard enough for daily wear but may crack or chip with a sharp knock, especially pieces with internal fractures. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and avoid ultrasonic cleaners for dyed or resin-filled stones.
Rose quartz in tradition
Many people traditionally associate rose quartz with love, gentleness and harmony at home, and it is a popular gift for engagements and anniversaries. These are beliefs, not promised effects. See stones for love and harmony and nikah and wedding gemstone gifts.
Rose quartz or other pink stones?
Rose quartz is softer in colour and cloudier than most pink gems. Kunzite is transparent and changes shade as you turn it; pink tourmaline is clear and often deeper in tone; pink topaz is bright and slippery to the touch. If you want a clear, sparkling pink, one of those may suit you better than rose quartz.
Choosing a shape and setting
Because most rose quartz is translucent rather than clear, it shows best in shapes that hold colour: smooth cabochons, rounded beads, hearts and carvings. A larger stone usually shows a richer pink than a small one cut from the same material, so pale shades suit bigger pendants. For rings, a bezel or rubover setting protects the edges better than tall claws. Silver flatters the soft pink, while yellow gold warms it; see silver vs gold ring settings and stone setting.
