Natural Spinel Stone in Pakistan

Spinel is a hard, bright gemstone found in red, pink, purple, blue and black. For centuries the finest red spinels were called Laal and taken for ruby. GemStore is sourcing natural spinel now and will list each stone individually with its own photos. Until then, send us a WhatsApp request with the colour and size you want.

What spinel is

Spinel is a magnesium aluminium oxide that forms in marble and is also washed into gem gravels. It rates 8 on the Mohs scale, has no cleavage and takes a bright polish, so it is one of the better stones for a ring worn every day. It is singly refractive: its colour looks the same from every direction, while ruby and sapphire can show two slightly different shades as you turn them.

The old name Laal, or Laal-e-Badakhshan, comes from the historic mines of Badakhshan in the Pamir region. Many famous "rubies" in royal collections were later found to be spinel, the best known being the Black Prince's Ruby in the British crown. Closer to home, the marble of the Hunza valley that yields ruby also produces spinel, often as small pink to red crystals. See Hunza ruby and the gemstone mines of Pakistan.

Colours and varieties

  • Red: the classic Laal, from pure red to pinkish or slightly brownish red.
  • Pink and hot pink: bright, saturated pinks are much sought after.
  • Purple and lavender: soft to deep violet, often with a grey tint.
  • Blue: usually greyish blue. A pure, intense blue coloured by cobalt is rare.
  • Black: opaque and inexpensive, used for beads and men's rings.

Spinel or ruby?

A red spinel and a ruby can look almost identical. A gemmologist separates them with a refractometer (spinel gives one reading, ruby two) and a dichroscope (ruby shows two shades of red, spinel one). Inclusions differ too: spinel often holds tiny octahedral crystals, sometimes in rows, while ruby shows fine silk and angular colour zoning. Spinel is a gem in its own right with its own value, but it should never be sold as Yaqoot, and a red stone offered cheaply as "ruby" may be spinel or garnet. If ruby is what you want, see our ruby (Yaqoot) collection and how to identify original ruby.

Synthetic spinel and imitations

Synthetic spinel has been made cheaply for more than a century and is one of the most common imitation materials in the bazaar. Because it can be grown in almost any colour, it is used to copy aquamarine, blue sapphire, peridot and "white sapphire" as well as red Laal. Warning signs include:

  • a colour natural spinel rarely shows, such as pale sky blue or strong aqua green;
  • a large, flawless stone at a low price;
  • gas bubbles or curved growth lines under a 10x loupe.

Red glass and glued doublets are also sold as Laal. Separating natural from synthetic spinel needs instruments, so an independent lab report is the safest basis for buying a spinel of any value. Read natural vs synthetic gemstones.

Treatments

Most natural spinel reaches the market untreated, which is part of its appeal to collectors. Some stones are heated, and a lab can often detect the changes heat leaves behind. Lower grades are occasionally fracture-filled with oil or resin. When we list spinel, any known treatment will be stated on the listing.

What drives value

Colour matters most. A pure, bright red or an intense hot pink with no brown or grey sits at the top, followed by cobalt blue. Clarity comes next, since eye-clean stones are expected in red and pink. Size has a strong effect, because fine spinel over a few carats is scarce. A good cut decides how much brightness you see, and a known origin such as Burma, Badakhshan or Hunza adds interest for collectors. Untreated status confirmed by a lab adds confidence.

In Pakistani bazaars spinel is often quoted per ratti. The gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat, and our carat to ratti converter helps you compare quotes made in different units. For wider context, see gemstone prices in Pakistan.

Care

Spinel is hard and tough, so it suits rings. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe for untreated stones but should be avoided for any stone with fillings. Store spinel apart from diamonds and sapphires, which are harder and can scratch it.

Spinel in tradition

Laal holds a long place in Persian and Mughal history, where large red spinels were engraved with rulers' names and handed down as treasures. In some South Asian practice, red spinel is traditionally offered as a substitute stone (uparatna) for ruby and linked with the Sun. These are beliefs and customs, not promised outcomes. If this matters to you, speak to an astrologer or scholar you trust.

Spinel questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Is spinel the same as ruby?

No. Spinel is a separate mineral that can look very like ruby, and for centuries red spinel (Laal) was mistaken for it. A lab can tell them apart quickly.

Do you have spinel in stock?

Not yet. We are sourcing natural spinel and will list each stone individually; send a WhatsApp message to +92 308 887 3888 to be contacted when one arrives.

Is spinel found in Pakistan?

Yes. The marble of the Hunza valley that yields ruby also produces spinel, and the historic Laal mines of Badakhshan lie across the border.

Is synthetic spinel common?

Yes. Synthetic spinel is cheap and widely used to imitate aquamarine, sapphire and other stones, so ask for a lab report on any spinel of value.

Is spinel good for a ring?

Yes. At 8 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, spinel is hard and tough enough for a ring worn every day.

Is spinel treated?

Usually not. Most spinel is sold untreated, though some is heated, and any treatment we know of will be disclosed on the listing.
