Banding, contrast and finish

Sulemani Aqeeq: What Separates a Fine Stone from a Plain One

In short: A fine Sulemani aqeeq is set apart almost entirely by its bands and finish. Look for crisp white lines with clear edges, strong contrast against a deep, even dark ground, evenly spaced bands or well-formed eyes centred on the stone, and an even, glassy polish. Dyeing is widespread and generally stable, but should be disclosed.

Sulemani aqeeq is banded agate, typically black or dark brown with crisp white lines, sometimes forming eye-like rings. It is widely worn in Pakistan, and stones of the same size can vary a lot in price. The difference lies almost entirely in the bands and the finish, and you can learn to judge both in a minute.

The bands are the value

  • Crispness: sharp, clean white lines with clear edges are better than blurred or smudged ones.
  • Contrast: a deep, even dark ground against bright white bands looks striking and is valued higher.
  • Pattern: evenly spaced parallel bands or well-formed concentric "eyes" are the most sought after. Random, broken patterns are usually cheaper.
  • Placement: the cutter should centre the pattern on the stone so it looks balanced when set.

Natural colour and dyeing

Dyeing banded agate to deepen the dark layers is a very old and widespread practice, and much black-and-white agate on the market has been treated this way. It is generally stable. What matters is that it is disclosed. A completely jet-black ground with no variation at all is often a sign of dye.

Agate or glass?

Glass imitations show round bubbles under a loupe and warm quickly in the hand. Painted or printed bands lie on the surface rather than running through the stone; check the side and back to see whether the pattern continues. A flawless, perfectly patterned, very cheap stone deserves suspicion. Ask the seller to write that it is natural agate and whether it is dyed.

Finish and durability

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale agate is a sound daily ring stone. Look for an even, glassy polish, a symmetrical outline and no chips around the edge.

About the name

The name links the stone with Hazrat Sulaiman in popular tradition, and aqeeq in general has long been worn across the Muslim world. Any spiritual meaning is a matter of belief rather than a promised effect.
