Description

Madagascar is named as the origin of this labradorite, which is one of the better-known sources for the gem. At 21.7 carats it is also the heaviest labradorite we list at the moment.

The price is Rs. 3,680, or about Rs. 170 per carat, and the reference is GSN-LB-08.

Think of it as a showpiece. Labradorite is prized for the shifting play of colour it shows when tilted, and a stone this big gives that effect room to appear. Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5, so a pendant is the sensible form, with a ring reserved for careful wearers.

Labradorite is generally sold without treatment. Details specific to this stone are available when you message +92 308 887 3888.

The best way to appreciate it is to compare it with the smaller pieces in our labradorite section and decide which size you would actually wear.

A flat Rs. 500 covers shipping on the whole order, so adding a second stone does not raise the fee. A stone this large is best shown off alone, with no other pendants crowding it.

Pay Cash on Delivery once you have opened the parcel and seen the stone yourself, anywhere in Pakistan, with 7 days to return it if you change your mind. Before you choose, read our labradorite guide.

This particular stone

This listing is one natural labradorite with a weight of 21.7 Carat. Its price is Rs. 3,680 — roughly Rs. 170 for each carat. Origin: Madagascar. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GSN-LB-08 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.

Above twelve carats you are into collector territory. Pieces this heavy are usually set as pendants or kept loose, and they are prized for the size of rough they came from. If you do set it, choose a bezel or a heavy claw to protect the edges.

On the Mohs scale labradorite rates 6 to 6.5. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.

Whoever you buy labradorite from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every labradorite for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.

Questions about this stone

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What causes the flash in labradorite?

It is called labradorescence. The stone grew in fine alternating layers, and light reflecting between those layers interferes with itself and returns a colour the mineral does not actually contain. That is why the flash appears only at certain angles and disappears when you tilt the stone away.

Is this labradorite natural and untreated?

Yes. Labradorite is essentially never treated — there is no standard heating, dyeing or oiling for it. The imitations to watch for are coated quartz, which shows an oily rainbow across the whole surface instead of a directional flash, and assembled doublets with a thin slice on a dark backing. We check every stone for both at the girdle under magnification.

Can a 21.70 carat labradorite be worn in a ring?

Yes, with a little care. At 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and with perfect cleavage in two directions, labradorite prefers a bezel setting that shields the edge, and suits occasional wear better than a daily ring.

Why does it look duller than in the photograph?

It should not — we photograph on plain white under even light rather than angling a spotlight to catch the flash. But labradorescence is directional by nature: it fires at one angle and goes dark at another, so any single still image shows one face of a stone that has several. Ask us for a video before you buy.
