Description
Weight and value
At 1.3 carats and Rs. 3,380, this opal comes to about Rs. 2,600 per carat. In opal, that figure moves with the strength and brightness of the colour play, so it is best read as a guide rather than a rule; a calmer stone costs less per carat than a vividly flashing one of the same weight.
Colour and setting
The stone is a natural fire opal and shows play-of-colour, the flickering effect for which opal is known. It is best placed in a setting that protects it: a closed-back pendant, or a ring setting with raised bezel edges. Silver suits it well, and a custom silver ring setting can be talked through on WhatsApp.
Hardness and treatment
Opal has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, so a ring needs mindful wearing. Opal that is solid right through is generally sold in its natural state, though darkened stones and layered doublets or triplets are out there. We sell solid natural opal only. Reference GS-000587 will get you what we know about this one, and we can arrange independent testing if you ask.

This particular stone
This listing is one natural opal with a weight of 1.3 Carat. Its price is Rs. 3,380 — roughly Rs. 2,600 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GS-000587 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.
Under two carats, a stone like this sits neatly in a slim ring, a stud or a delicate pendant and does not snag on sleeves. It is also where many first-time buyers begin when a stone is recommended for astrological reasons, because the total cost stays modest.
On the Mohs scale opal rates 5.5 to 6.5. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.
Whoever you buy opal from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every opal for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
