Description
Four carats and a bit is a middle-of-the-road size for a ruby, though the rate here shows why ruby is judged differently from other gems. This 4.3 carat Mozambique stone costs Rs. 64,500, about Rs. 15,000 per carat. Ruby prices climb fast with weight and colour, so a stone like this sits well above what the same weight in topaz or amethyst would cost.
In wearing terms, 4.3 carats is a comfortable ring size: noticeable without being a lump on the finger. It is red, and at 9 on the Mohs scale it will not mind daily use. When you compare it with other rubies, look at how evenly the red is distributed and how it behaves in different light, because those are the things that separate similar-weight stones.
What to look for in this family
Treatment deserves a question with ruby: heating is widespread, and lower grades may be glass-filled. Glass-filled material is never sold here as natural ruby. Ask about reference GS-000512 and we will tell you what we know. The ruby category lets you compare weights, and independent lab testing is available on request.

This particular stone
This listing is one natural ruby, known in Urdu as Yaqoot, with a weight of 4.3 Carat. Its price is Rs. 64,500 — roughly Rs. 15,000 for each carat. Origin: Mozambique. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GS-000512 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.
Between two and six carats is the range most people choose for a gents' ring or a noticeable pendant. Here colour drives the price more than size does, which is why two stones of near-identical weight can be priced very differently.
On the Mohs scale ruby rates 9. Few materials will scratch it, so it copes well with everyday ring wear. A soak in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush keeps it bright; skip the ultrasonic cleaner if inclusions reach the surface.
Whoever you buy ruby from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every ruby for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
