Simple checks for a simple stone

Choosing White Agate (Safed Aqeeq): A Beginner's Checklist

In short: When choosing white agate (safed aqeeq), look for an even, milky white without grey, yellow or brown stains, soft translucency that glows when held to light, no hairline cracks and a smooth, glassy polish. Milky glass is the most common imitation; it shows round bubbles under a loupe and warms almost immediately in the hand.

White agate, called safed aqeeq, is a quiet, milky stone that is popular in Pakistan for rings worn every day. It is not expensive, which is exactly why it is worth taking a minute over: a cheap stone that turns out to be glass is still money wasted. This checklist covers everything a first-time buyer needs.

Know what it should look like

White agate is chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. A good stone is softly translucent, like milk diluted with water, rather than chalky and opaque. Hold it up to a light and you should see a gentle glow, sometimes with faint banding or cloudy patterns inside.

Checklist for a good stone

  1. Even, clean colour: a pure milky white without grey, yellow or brown stains.
  2. Translucency: light should pass through; very opaque white stones look flat when set.
  3. No cracks: check the stone against the light for hairline cracks, which can grow over time.
  4. Polish and shape: a smooth, glassy surface and a symmetrical outline, with no chips at the edges.

Agate, glass or something else?

Milky glass is the most common imitation. Under a loupe glass shows round bubbles, and it warms almost immediately in the hand, while agate stays cool longer. Some white stones are bleached or treated to whiten them; this should be disclosed. A flawless, perfectly uniform and cheap stone deserves a second look. Ask the seller to write that it is natural agate and whether anything has been done to it.

Wear and care

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale white agate is a good everyday ring stone. Because it is pale, it shows dirt and skin oil, so clean it now and then with mild soap and water. Avoid strong chemicals and bleach.

Price

Translucency, evenness of colour and freedom from cracks drive the price, more than size. We price every stone individually.

Before you pay

Confirm three things: the stone is natural agate, any treatment is in writing, and the weight is the cut stone's. We inspect every stone and photograph each one alone. Browse white agate, or compare aquamarine and hematite. Our gem names page lists Urdu and English names, and Cash on Delivery reaches Lahore, Karachi and every other city in Pakistan.
