Simple care for a hard-wearing stone

Green Agate at Home: Cleaning, Dye and Long-Term Care

In short: Green agate is hard and forgiving, so care is mostly common sense: rinse briefly in lukewarm water with mild soap, brush gently, dry straight away and polish with a soft cloth. Much bright green agate is dyed, so avoid bleach, acids, jewellery dips, long soaks and prolonged harsh sunlight, and store it in its own pouch.

Green agate is a hard, forgiving stone, so most of its care is common sense. The one thing worth understanding is where its colour comes from, because that decides which cleaners and habits are safe.

Where the green comes from

Some agate is naturally green or greenish grey, coloured by traces of minerals such as chlorite. Much of the bright, saturated green agate in the market, however, has been dyed, because agate's fine layers absorb colour readily. Dyed agate is still natural agate, and the dye is usually stable, but strong chemicals, long soaking and prolonged harsh sunlight can weaken it over time. If you are not sure which you have, treat it gently either way.

How tough is green agate?

As a variety of chalcedony, green agate sits around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it suits a daily ring. The weak point is the edge of a cabochon: a knock against a hard surface can chip it. A bezel setting helps.

Cleaning routine

  1. Wipe or briefly rinse in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap.
  2. Use a soft brush on the back of the setting where dust gathers.
  3. Rinse, dry straight away, and polish with a soft cloth.

Avoid bleach, acids, jewellery dips and long soaks, which are the main risks to a dyed stone. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are best avoided too.

Storage and wear

  • Store it in its own pouch so harder gems do not scratch it and it does not scratch softer ones.
  • Put it on after perfume and hand cream, and take it off for cleaning work with chemicals.
  • Keep it out of a sunny car or windowsill for long periods.

Is it real agate?

Glass is the usual imitation. It shows round bubbles under magnification and warms quickly in the hand, while agate stays cool for longer and shows layered banding or cloudy texture. Ask the seller in writing whether the stone is natural and whether its colour has been dyed; we disclose this where known.

Picking a good green agate

If you like green stones, also look at lapis lazuli for contrast or ruby for something special.
