Yellow Topaz Price in Pakistan: Golden Topaz and Sunehla

In short: Yellow topaz is priced first on the warmth of its colour, with the sherry, peach and pinkish-orange imperial shades most valued, and clarity, cut and size then place a stone within its colour band. Sort out the name before the price, since sunehla, pukhraj and golden topaz are also used for citrine and yellow sapphire, which are priced very differently.

Yellow topaz is priced first on the warmth of its colour. A pale straw stone and a rich golden-orange stone of the same size can sit a long way apart, and stones that reach the sherry, peach or pinkish-orange shades known in the trade as imperial topaz are the most valued of all. Clarity, cut and size then decide where a stone sits within its colour band.

Buying yellow topaz in Pakistan has an extra difficulty: the names. Sellers use sunehla, pukhraj and "golden topaz" for several different stones, including citrine and yellow sapphire, which are priced very differently. This guide sorts out the names, explains each price factor and the ratti question, and shows how to compare quotes. GemStore's own topaz prices are in the table below, refreshed monthly from our listings.

The table is built from GemStore's own listings. It shows the lowest, typical and highest price per stone, then the same spread per carat and per ratti, so you can test any quote against real figures.

Sort out the name before the price

In Pakistani bazaars three different stones are often described with overlapping words, and this is the single biggest cause of overpaying or underpaying.

Yellow sapphire is the pukhraj of Vedic astrology and costs much more than either topaz or citrine. Citrine is the most plentiful and usually the least costly. Yellow topaz sits between them. If a seller calls a stone "pukhraj" at a topaz price, ask whether it is sapphire or topaz. If a stone is sold as "topaz" at a very low price, ask whether it is actually citrine. Our comparison of yellow sapphire and citrine shows how to tell them apart, and the gemstone names page lists the Urdu and English names side by side.

What sets the price of yellow topaz

Colour

The scale runs from pale lemon and straw, through golden yellow, to deep golden-orange, sherry and peach-pink tones. Price rises with warmth and saturation. Imperial topaz, a trade name for the richest orange, pink-orange and red-orange shades, sits at the top. Pale yellow stones are attractive and affordable; very light stones that look almost colourless are priced close to white topaz.

Clarity

Topaz forms large, clean crystals, so faceted yellow topaz is expected to be eye-clean. Visible inclusions or cracks should reduce the price noticeably. Two-phase inclusions or fine needles seen only under a loupe are normal and do not matter much.

Cut

A well-cut topaz is bright across the face with no dull window in the centre. Topaz crystals are long, so it is often cut as elongated ovals and pears, which make good use of the rough. Check the side view: a deep, bulky bottom adds weight you pay for without adding brightness.

Size

Ordinary yellow topaz comes in large sizes, so price per carat rises fairly gently with weight. Deeply coloured imperial material is far scarcer in large clean pieces, and its price per carat climbs much more quickly with size.

Origin

Brazil supplies much of the world's golden and imperial topaz. Pakistan has its own famous source: the Katlang area of Mardan district, known for pink to orange-pink topaz. Katlang stones are often small, and a fine Katlang colour is valued by collectors at home. Because the stones come from Pakistan itself, buyers here sometimes see them offered by dealers from Mardan and Peshawar. Treat any claim of Katlang origin the way you would treat any origin claim: useful if it is documented, but not a reason to pay more on a seller's word alone. Colour, clarity and cut still decide the price first. Our planned guide to Katlang pink topaz covers the source, and the planned pink topaz collection will hold those stones.

Treatment

Some topaz is heated to turn brownish or orange tones pink, and some colourless topaz is coated or irradiated to produce colour. A coated stone has a colour layer on its surface that can wear off. Treatments should be declared and priced lower than natural colour. Ask in writing.

Per carat and per ratti

Topaz is quoted per stone, per carat and often per ratti in Pakistan.

  • 1 carat is 0.2 grams.
  • The gemstone ratti used in Pakistan is 0.91 carat, about 0.182 grams.
  • The jeweller's sunari ratti is about 0.1215 grams, roughly 0.61 carat.

A per-ratti rate on the sunari scale looks lower than the same price on the gemstone scale, but it covers less weight. Convert every quote to carats with our carat to ratti converter, multiply out to a total and only then compare.

Topaz is also heavier for its size than quartz. A ten-carat topaz is a little smaller than a ten-carat citrine, so check the millimetre size as well as the weight.

Yellow topaz as a pukhraj substitute

In Vedic astrology yellow sapphire is linked with Jupiter, and some astrologers suggest yellow topaz as a lower-cost substitute. Others do not accept it. This is a traditional belief, not a promised result, and practitioners differ on weight, metal and finger. If you are buying on such advice, confirm with your astrologer that topaz is acceptable before you buy, and ask which ratti they mean. See Sagittarius gemstones and Pisces gemstones for the traditional pairings, and yellow sapphire benefits for the stone it substitutes.

Why yellow topaz prices differ so much between sellers

Ask for "golden topaz" at three shops and you may be shown three different materials. One may offer genuine yellow topaz, another citrine described as topaz, and a third a colourless topaz with a thin coating that gives it a golden colour. All three can look similar in a photograph under warm light, and all three are priced differently for good reason.

Weight conventions add to the spread. A seller using the sunari ratti shows more rattis for the same stone, and a seller quoting the weight of a stone already set in a ring gives a figure you cannot check. Some quotes are per stone, some per carat and some per ratti, and few sellers say which unless asked.

When you reduce every offer to the same five facts, the gap narrows quickly: the mineral, the exact carat weight, the colour in daylight, the treatment, and whether the stone is eye-clean. The table above then tells you where a fair price for that description sits.

Calibrated, freeform and matched stones

Stones cut to standard millimetre sizes are easy to set in a ready-made mount and save on the jeweller's bill, though they can cost a little more per carat because more rough is lost in cutting. Freeform or unusual sizes can be good value if you are happy to have a mount made. Matched pairs for earrings cost more than two single stones, because finding two pieces of the same shade takes time. If you want a pair, ask to see both stones together in one daylight photograph.

How to compare yellow topaz quotes

  1. Mineral named in writing. Topaz, citrine or yellow sapphire.
  2. Colour in daylight. Warm shop lights make yellow stones look more golden than they are.
  3. Exact carat weight and the ratti scale used.
  4. Treatment. Natural, heated, irradiated or coated.
  5. Clarity. Should be eye-clean for faceted stones.
  6. Cut and side view. No window, no heavy belly.
  7. Returns and inspection before payment.

Budget tiers by filter

Our natural golden topaz from Brazil is a good reference for the golden end of the range. For comparison at a lower price, the 5.50 carat citrine shows what quartz sunehla looks like, and the 2.25 carat yellow sapphire shows the higher-priced pukhraj.

Wearing it and keeping its value

At 8 on the Mohs scale topaz resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage in one direction, so a hard knock can split it. Choose a setting that protects the corners, and take the ring off for heavy work. Keep it away from strong heat, which can change some colours, and avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Our topaz care guide covers this in detail, and the planned yellow topaz buying guide goes further into choosing a stone. Topaz is also a November birthstone.

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What is the price of yellow topaz in Pakistan?

It depends mainly on the depth and warmth of the colour, then on clarity, cut and size. The table on this page shows GemStore's current lowest, typical and highest prices per stone, per carat and per ratti.

Is yellow topaz the same as pukhraj?

No. Pukhraj in Vedic tradition is yellow sapphire, a harder and more costly stone. Some sellers use the name loosely for topaz, so ask which mineral you are buying.

Is sunehla topaz or citrine?

The name is used for both. Citrine is quartz and usually cheaper, while yellow topaz is harder and denser, so ask the seller to name the mineral in writing.

What is imperial topaz?

It is a trade name for topaz in the richest golden-orange, sherry and pink-orange shades. It is the most valued colour of topaz.

Can yellow topaz be worn instead of yellow sapphire?

Some astrologers suggest it as a substitute and others do not. This is a traditional belief, so confirm with your own astrologer before buying.

How many carats is one ratti of topaz?

One gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat. The sunari ratti used by goldsmiths is about 0.61 carat.
