Sagittarius Gemstones: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) and Citrine برج قوس
In short: The traditional Sagittarius stone is yellow sapphire (Pukhraj), because Sagittarius, called Dhanu in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Jupiter. The usual substitutes are citrine (Sunehla) and yellow topaz. Pukhraj is one of the stronger stones, so a reading is usually advised first, and it is traditionally worn on the index finger in gold.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
Primary stone: yellow sapphire (Pukhraj)
Jupiter (Guru) is traditionally linked with wisdom, prosperity, children and teachers, and Pukhraj is its gem. It is yellow corundum, hard and bright. Browse our yellow sapphire stones; each has its own photograph and price.
Secondary stone: citrine or yellow topaz
Citrine is the most common Jupiter substitute and is considered milder. Yellow topaz is also accepted, and more topaz colours are listed separately. In many readings Pukhraj may be worn with ruby or pearl.
How Pukhraj is traditionally worn
- Finger: the index finger.
- Metal: gold.
- Day: first worn on a Thursday morning, the day of Jupiter.
Most readings keep Pukhraj apart from Venus stones such as diamond and white sapphire.
What to check when buying
- Most yellow sapphire is heated. Ask whether yours is heated, untreated or beryllium-treated.
- Citrine, yellow glass and synthetic sapphire are passed off as Pukhraj. Ask which mineral you are buying.
- Even colour without brownish or greenish patches is preferred.
- For a valuable stone, ask us to arrange independent lab testing. See how we check every stone.

Budget
Citrine is often in the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters. Pukhraj of astrological weight is more likely to be in 20,000 to 50,000 or Over 50,000.
Care
Pukhraj is hard and easy to clean with warm soapy water. Citrine can fade in long, strong sunlight. See our gemstone care guide.
Buying Pukhraj and citrine from GemStore
Each stone is photographed as it is and priced on its own, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged. Pay by Cash on Delivery anywhere in Pakistan and open the parcel to inspect the stone before paying the rider. Dispatch is in 1–2 working days; see our delivery details. Tell us whether your astrologer asked for an untreated Pukhraj or allowed a heated one, and the minimum weight, and we will shortlist stones. If Pukhraj is beyond your budget, we will show citrine or yellow topaz instead.
The dates above are the Western sun-sign dates. In Vedic practice your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it often differs from your sun sign. Our rashi guide explains how to find it.
