Pisces Gemstones: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) and Citrine برج حوت
In short: The traditional Pisces stone is yellow sapphire (Pukhraj), because Pisces, called Meen in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Jupiter, and it shares Pukhraj with Sagittarius. Citrine (Sunehla) and yellow topaz are the usual substitutes. Pukhraj is traditionally set in gold and first worn on the index finger on a Thursday morning.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
Primary stone: yellow sapphire (Pukhraj)
Pukhraj is the gem of Jupiter (Guru), linked in the tradition with wisdom, prosperity, children and teachers. Buyers usually prefer a clean lemon to golden yellow. Our yellow sapphire stones are listed individually so you can compare colour and weight.
Secondary stone: citrine (Sunehla)
Citrine is the common Jupiter substitute, traditionally milder and often worn without a reading. Yellow topaz is also accepted. For a gentler yellow stone in Aqeeq, see yellow agate, though it is not a classical substitute.
How Pukhraj is traditionally worn
- Finger: the index finger.
- Metal: gold.
- Day: first worn on a Thursday morning.
Pukhraj is often allowed with ruby or pearl in readings, and kept apart from diamond and other Venus stones.
What to check when buying
- Ask whether the Pukhraj is heated, untreated or beryllium-diffused. Astrologers often ask for untreated stones.
- Yellow glass, citrine and synthetic sapphire are sold as Pukhraj. Hardness and refractive index separate them; a lab can confirm.
- Most citrine on the market is heated amethyst; that is normal but should be disclosed.
- See how we check every stone.
Read citrine: heated, natural and tradition.
Budget
Citrine and yellow agate often appear in the Under 5,000 filter. Compare Pukhraj of astrological weight in 20,000 to 50,000 and Over 50,000.
Care
Clean Pukhraj in warm soapy water with a soft brush. Keep citrine out of long, direct sunlight. See our gemstone care guide and topaz care.
Buying Pukhraj and citrine from GemStore
Each stone is photographed as it is and priced on its own, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged. Pay by Cash on Delivery anywhere in Pakistan and open the parcel to inspect the stone before paying the rider. Dispatch is in 1–2 working days; see our delivery details. Tell us whether your astrologer asked for an untreated Pukhraj and the minimum weight, and we will shortlist stones to match. If Pukhraj is beyond your budget, we will show citrine or yellow topaz instead, and say plainly which is which.
The dates above are the Western sun-sign dates. In Vedic practice your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it often differs from your sun sign. Our rashi guide explains how to find it.
