Description

Most labradorite flashes blue, which makes a gold flash the surprise of this group. This 17.9 carat cabochon throws warm amber running towards copper at one end, and it is the strongest gold flash in the stones we have listed together. Gold is less common than blue because the layer spacing that produces longer wavelengths turns up less often in the rough.

That rarity shows in the rate. At Rs. 3,040 it works out at about Rs. 170 per carat, still modest, but a notch above its blue neighbours. Colour tastes matter here: gold flash suits yellow metal in a way that blue does not. Set it in silver and the colours argue; in gold or brass they agree.

Labradorite is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and splits easily in two directions, so we would put this one in a pendant or earrings before a daily ring. Wipe it with a damp cloth, avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and store it away from harder stones.

Photographs capture the shape of a flash poorly, so if you would like a short video of the colour moving across the dome, message us on WhatsApp with GSN-LB-03. The labradorite category has more to compare.

Cash on Delivery is available across Pakistan, so you inspect the stone before paying, and returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery. Before you choose, read our labradorite guide.

This particular stone

This listing is one natural labradorite with a weight of 17.9 Carat. Its price is Rs. 3,040 — roughly Rs. 170 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GSN-LB-03 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.

Above twelve carats you are into collector territory. Pieces this heavy are usually set as pendants or kept loose, and they are prized for the size of rough they came from. If you do set it, choose a bezel or a heavy claw to protect the edges.

On the Mohs scale labradorite rates 6 to 6.5. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.

Whoever you buy labradorite from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every labradorite for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.

Questions about this stone

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What causes the flash in labradorite?

It is called labradorescence. The stone grew in fine alternating layers, and light reflecting between those layers interferes with itself and returns a colour the mineral does not actually contain. That is why the flash appears only at certain angles and disappears when you tilt the stone away.

Is this labradorite natural and untreated?

Yes. Labradorite is essentially never treated — there is no standard heating, dyeing or oiling for it. The imitations to watch for are coated quartz, which shows an oily rainbow across the whole surface instead of a directional flash, and assembled doublets with a thin slice on a dark backing. We check every stone for both at the girdle under magnification.

Can a 17.90 carat labradorite be worn in a ring?

Yes, with a little care. At 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and with perfect cleavage in two directions, labradorite prefers a bezel setting that shields the edge, and suits occasional wear better than a daily ring.

Why does it look duller than in the photograph?

It should not — we photograph on plain white under even light rather than angling a spotlight to catch the flash. But labradorescence is directional by nature: it fires at one angle and goes dark at another, so any single still image shows one face of a stone that has several. Ask us for a video before you buy.
