Leo Gemstones: Ruby (Yaqoot) and Garnet برج اسد

In short: The traditional Leo stone is ruby (Yaqoot, also called Manik), because Leo, called Simha in Vedic astrology, is ruled by the Sun. Red garnet is the usual substitute and is considered milder. Ruby is one of the stronger stones in the tradition, so a reading is normally advised before wearing it on the ring finger.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.

Primary stone: ruby (Yaqoot)

Ruby is the gem of the Sun (Surya), traditionally linked with authority, vitality, the father and confidence. It is red corundum, hard enough for daily wear. Browse our ruby stones, each photographed and priced on its own.

Secondary stone: red garnet

Garnet is the substitute for ruby and is considered milder. Red spinel is also named. In many readings ruby is allowed alongside yellow sapphire or pearl, while it is usually kept apart from Neelam.

How ruby is traditionally worn

  • Finger: the ring finger.
  • Metal: gold or copper.
  • Day: first worn on a Sunday around sunrise, the day of the Sun.

The setting is usually open at the back so the stone touches the skin. Tradition also suggests a short trial before committing to a strong stone.

What to check when buying ruby

  • Glass-filled ruby is sold widely. Ask directly whether the stone is heated, filled or untreated.
  • Synthetic ruby can look perfect. A flawless, bright stone at a low price needs testing.
  • Fine silk and natural inclusions under a loupe are normal in natural ruby.
  • Use our 7-day return policy to decide before you have the stone set.

Budget

Ruby is priced on colour, clarity, treatment and size, and an untreated stone of astrological weight costs more. Garnet often sits in the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters; compare ruby in 20,000 to 50,000 and Over 50,000.

Care

Ruby is hard, but filled rubies can be damaged by heat and chemicals. Clean in lukewarm soapy water with a soft brush. See our gemstone care guide.

The dates above are the Western sun-sign dates. In Vedic practice your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it often differs from your sun sign. Our rashi guide explains how to find it.
