White topaz is priced on clarity and cut. Because it has no colour to judge, the two things you pay for are how clean the stone is and how well it returns light. A crisp, eye-clean, well-cut white topaz sparkles brightly and looks expensive; a cloudy or badly cut one looks like glass, and should be priced accordingly. Size comes third, and it matters less than you might expect.
In Pakistan white topaz is bought mostly as an affordable natural colourless stone, often in place of diamond in a navratan setting or as a clear ring stone for daily wear. This guide explains what moves its price, how it compares with the other colourless stones you will be offered, how per-carat and per-ratti quotes work, and how to compare offers. GemStore's own white topaz prices are in the table below, refreshed monthly from our listings.
GemStore white topaz prices
The table is built from the white topaz we list. Each stone is photographed alone and priced on its own, so the figures show the real spread: lowest, typical and highest price per stone, then per carat and per ratti.
| Weight | Weights | Stones | Per carat | Per ratti |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 – 6 carat | 5.3 – 5.8 ct | 2 | Rs 450 – Rs 900 | Rs 410 – Rs 800 |
| 6 – 10 carat | 6.3 – 9.5 ct | 8 | Rs 900 – Rs 900 | Rs 800 – Rs 800 |
| Over 10 carat | 10.0 – 12.6 ct | 3 | Rs 900 – Rs 900 | Rs 800 – Rs 800 |
For white topaz the per-carat figure usually moves only gently from smaller to larger stones, because clean rough is plentiful. The monthly gemstone price guide compares white topaz with the other stones we sell.
What sets the price of white topaz
Clarity
Clarity is the first thing to judge. Topaz grows in large, clean crystals, so a faceted white topaz is expected to be eye-clean. In a colourless stone every inclusion shows, because there is no colour to hide it. Feathers, clouds or a crack visible at arm's length should bring the price down a long way. Tiny inclusions seen only under a loupe are normal and barely affect value.
Cut
Cut matters more for white topaz than for almost any coloured stone, because brilliance is all it has. A well-cut stone is bright from edge to edge. A poorly cut one shows a dull, glassy window in the centre, or dark patches where light leaks out of the back. Look for even sparkle across the face and crisp facet edges in the video. Precision-cut stones cost a little more and are worth it.
Colourlessness
Most white topaz is genuinely colourless. Some has a faint grey, blue or brownish tint, which you will see best against a white sheet of paper in daylight. A tinted stone should cost less than a truly colourless one.
Size
Clean colourless topaz is plentiful in large sizes, so price per carat rises slowly with weight. A 10-carat stone does not cost much more per carat than a 5-carat stone of the same quality. That makes white topaz one of the few natural stones where a large ring stone is easy to afford.
Treatment
White topaz is usually untreated. Its main role in the market, though, is as the raw material for other colours: most blue topaz begins as colourless topaz that is irradiated and heated, and "mystic" rainbow topaz is colourless topaz with a surface coating. A plain white topaz should be natural and untreated, and the seller should say so in writing.
How it compares with other colourless stones
You will often be offered several clear stones side by side. Their prices are not comparable, so it helps to know what each one is.
| Stone | Natural? | Hardness | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Yes | 10 | Strong brilliance and fire |
| White sapphire | Yes | 9 | Bright, slightly more brilliant than topaz |
| White topaz | Yes | 8 | Clear and bright, little fire |
| White zircon | Yes | 6.5 to 7.5 | Strong fire, edges wear more easily |
| Rock crystal (Dur-e-Najaf) | Yes | 7 | Clear, calm white sparkle |
| Cubic zirconia | No, lab-made | About 8 to 8.5 | Strong rainbow fire, heavy for its size |
White topaz sits in a sensible middle: harder than quartz and zircon, natural unlike cubic zirconia, and far less costly than white sapphire or diamond. A white sapphire of the same size will usually cost several times more. If a stone sold as white topaz throws strong rainbow flashes and feels heavy, ask whether it is cubic zirconia. Our planned zircon collection and the Dur-e-Najaf collection cover two of the other natural options.
White topaz in a navratan
In South Asian astrology the diamond is the stone of Venus, and in a navratan, the nine-stone setting, white topaz is often used in its place when a diamond is out of budget. Some astrologers accept this substitute and others prefer white sapphire. These are traditional beliefs, not promised outcomes. If you are buying for a navratan, ask the astrologer which substitute they accept and what size they want. Our planned navratan collection and the page on the nine planetary stones explain the set. White topaz is also listed for April as a diamond alternative.
Per carat and per ratti
- 1 carat is 0.2 grams.
- The gemstone ratti used in Pakistan is 0.91 carat, about 0.182 grams.
- The jeweller's sunari ratti is about 0.1215 grams, roughly 0.61 carat.
A low per-ratti rate on the sunari scale covers less weight than the same rate on the gemstone scale. Convert every quote to carats with our carat to ratti converter, multiply out to a total and compare totals.
Topaz is a dense stone, so a white topaz looks a little smaller than a rock crystal or white zircon of the same weight. For setting purposes, the millimetre size is the figure that tells you how it will look on your hand.
Shapes and sizes for common uses
For a navratan, the white topaz usually sits at the centre or in one of the eight surrounding places, so the size has to match the other stones; ask your jeweller for the millimetre size before you buy. For a solitaire ring, ovals and cushions are the most popular in Pakistan, and they hide the stone's slight lack of fire better than a round. Emerald cuts look clean and modern but show every inclusion, so they need a very clean stone. Pears and marquise shapes suit pendants and earrings, with a setting that protects the points. For a men's ring, a larger oval or cushion of eight carats and above gives a bold look at a price few other natural stones can match.
Why white topaz quotes vary so much
The word "white stone" covers a lot in Pakistani markets. One seller's white topaz may be another's rock crystal, white zircon or cubic zirconia, and all of them look similar in a quick photo. Cut quality also varies widely, because colourless topaz is often cut fast for weight. Two stones of the same carat weight can differ greatly in sparkle, and the better cut costs more for good reason.
When you reduce each offer to the same facts, the mineral, exact weight, clarity, cut seen in a video, and whether the stone is untreated, quotes tend to settle into a narrow band. The table above shows where GemStore's stones sit within it.
How to compare white topaz quotes
- Mineral in writing. Natural topaz, not cubic zirconia, glass or quartz.
- Treatment. Should be none. Coated "mystic" stones are a different product.
- Clarity. Eye-clean at arm's length, confirmed in a daylight photo.
- Cut. A video showing even sparkle across the face, with no central window.
- Tint. A photo against white paper.
- Exact carat weight, millimetre size and the ratti scale used.
- Returns and inspection before paying.
Budget tiers by filter
- Under 5,000 rupees: smaller white topaz suitable for a navratan or a simple ring. Check the cut carefully at this level.
- 5,000 to 20,000 rupees: clean, well-cut stones in larger ring sizes.
- 20,000 to 50,000 rupees: very large or precision-cut stones. At this budget, also compare small white sapphire.
Our stones show how size and price relate: the 5.30 carat white topaz, a neat size for a women's ring, and the 11.50 carat white topaz, a bold men's ring stone. Compare them with the table to see how gently the per-carat figure climbs.
Keeping it bright protects its value
At 8 on the Mohs scale white topaz resists scratches, but it has perfect cleavage in one direction and can split if knocked hard. A setting that protects the corners and girdle is wise for daily wear. Its biggest everyday problem is simply grease: a film of soap or skin oil on the back makes it look grey and dull. Regular cleaning in warm soapy water with a soft brush restores it. Our white topaz care guide covers this in detail, and the silver vs gold settings guide helps with the metal. White gold or silver keeps it icy; yellow gold gives it a warm cast.
