Description

Labradorite is not a stone for knocks, and this 32.4 carat piece is large enough that you should think about that before it goes into a ring. Mohs hardness is 6 to 6.5, which is softer than quartz. Sand and dust in daily life are mostly quartz, so a ring worn every day will pick up fine scratches on the dome sooner than a harder gem would. A pendant is gentler on it.

The stone itself shows a strong gold flash. At this weight the glow covers a wide area, and it moves as you move. It is the largest on our labradorite list at Rs. 5,250, about Rs. 162 per carat, which is almost the same per-carat rate as the smaller stones, so the extra price buys size rather than a finer grade.

To look after it, wipe with a soft damp cloth, dry it, and store it in its own pouch away from diamonds, sapphires or anything else that can scratch it. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and sudden heat. Above twelve carats you are into collector territory. Pieces this heavy are usually set as pendants or kept loose, and they are prized for the size of rough they came from. If you do set it, choose a bezel or a heavy claw to protect the edges.

On the Mohs scale labradorite rates 6 to 6.5. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.

Whoever you buy labradorite from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every labradorite for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.

Questions about this stone

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What causes the flash in labradorite?

It is called labradorescence. The stone grew in fine alternating layers, and light reflecting between those layers interferes with itself and returns a colour the mineral does not actually contain. That is why the flash appears only at certain angles and disappears when you tilt the stone away.

Is this labradorite natural and untreated?

Yes. Labradorite is essentially never treated — there is no standard heating, dyeing or oiling for it. The imitations to watch for are coated quartz, which shows an oily rainbow across the whole surface instead of a directional flash, and assembled doublets with a thin slice on a dark backing. We check every stone for both at the girdle under magnification.

Can a 32.40 carat labradorite be worn in a ring?

At this size it is really a pendant or a collector's piece. Labradorite is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale with perfect cleavage, so a cabochon this large is best kept clear of knocks rather than worn on the hand every day.

Why does it look duller than in the photograph?

It should not — we photograph on plain white under even light rather than angling a spotlight to catch the flash. But labradorescence is directional by nature: it fires at one angle and goes dark at another, so any single still image shows one face of a stone that has several. Ask us for a video before you buy.
