Aquarius Gemstones: Blue Sapphire (Neelam) and Lapis Lazuli برج دلو
In short: The traditional Aquarius stone is blue sapphire (Neelam), because Aquarius, called Kumbh in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Saturn, and it shares Neelam with Capricorn. The substitutes are amethyst (Jamunia) and lapis lazuli (Lajward), traditionally milder. Astrologers are most careful with Neelam, as tradition holds that its effect depends heavily on the chart.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
Primary stone: blue sapphire (Neelam)
Neelam is the gem of Saturn (Shani). It is the stone people most often ask us about, and also the one astrologers are most careful with, because the tradition holds that its effect depends heavily on the chart. Browse blue sapphire in a range of shades, from cornflower to deep royal blue.
Secondary stones: amethyst and lapis lazuli
Amethyst and lapis lazuli are both named as Saturn substitutes and are traditionally milder. Lajward has long been mined in the region and is cut as cabochons and beads. Tanzanite is another blue-violet stone some buyers look at, though it is not a classical substitute.
How Neelam is traditionally worn
- Finger: the middle finger.
- Metal: silver, white gold or panchdhatu.
- Day: first worn on a Saturday evening.
An open-back setting is used so the stone touches the skin. Most readings keep Neelam away from ruby and red coral.
What to check when buying
- Ask whether the Neelam is heated, untreated or diffusion-treated, and expect a clear answer.
- Glass and synthetic sapphire can look very clean. A loupe and, for costly stones, a lab test settle it.
- For lapis, look for even blue with scattered gold pyrite; heavy white calcite lowers value, and dye can rub off.

Budget
Lapis and amethyst are easy to compare in the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters. For Neelam of astrological weight, look in 20,000 to 50,000 and Over 50,000.
Care
Sapphire takes warm soapy water well. Lapis is softer and porous, so wipe it and keep it from water, oil and perfume. See our gemstone care guide.
