Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.

Primary stone: emerald (Zamurd)

Emerald is the gem of Mercury (Budh), which rules both Gemini and Virgo. In the tradition Mercury is linked with intellect, speech, trade and study, so emerald is often chosen by students and traders. Nearly every emerald has natural inclusions, called jardin. Browse emerald stones; stock in this category is small, so message us if you need a set weight.

Secondary stone: peridot (Zabarjad)

Peridot is the main substitute for emerald and is mined in Pakistan's own northern areas. Green tourmaline and green agate are also listed as Mercury substitutes. Substitutes are traditionally considered milder.

How emerald is traditionally worn

  • Finger: the little finger.
  • Metal: gold or silver.
  • Day: first worn on a Wednesday morning, the day of Mercury.

An open-back setting lets the stone touch the skin. Emerald is often allowed alongside Neelam or Venus stones in readings, but ask about your own chart.

What to check when buying emerald

  • Most emeralds are oiled or resin-filled to hide cracks. Ask what treatment the stone has had.
  • A completely clean, cheap green stone is more likely to be glass or synthetic.
  • Look for natural inclusions under a loupe; gas bubbles suggest glass.
  • For a costly stone, ask us to arrange independent lab testing.

Our guide how to identify a natural emerald explains these checks.

Budget

Emerald is priced on colour, clarity and treatment, and it tends to cost more than its substitutes. Peridot and green agate are easy to find in the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters; compare emerald in 20,000 to 50,000 and Over 50,000.

Care

Never put an oiled emerald in an ultrasonic cleaner or hot water. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth. See our gemstone care guide.

Buying emerald and peridot from GemStore

Each stone is photographed as it is and priced on its own, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged. Pay by Cash on Delivery anywhere in Pakistan and open the parcel to inspect the stone before paying the rider. Dispatch is in 1–2 working days; see our delivery details. Because emerald stock is small, we may suggest a good peridot if the emerald you need is not available, and say so plainly.

The dates above are the Western sun-sign dates. In Vedic practice your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it often differs from your sun sign. Our rashi guide explains how to find it.
