Virgo Gemstones: Emerald (Zamurd) and Peridot برج سنبلہ

In short: The traditional Virgo stone is emerald (Zamurd, or Panna), because Virgo, called Kanya in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Mercury, and it shares this stone with Gemini. The usual substitute is peridot (Zabarjad), much of it from Pakistan's northern areas. Emerald is traditionally worn on the little finger, first put on on a Wednesday morning.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.

Primary stone: emerald (Panna)

In jyotish, Mercury (Budh) governs intellect, speech, trade and study, and emerald is its gem. Emerald is green beryl, and good colour matters more than perfect clarity, since almost every natural emerald has inclusions. Our emerald category is small; send us your required weight on WhatsApp if you do not see a match.

Secondary stone: peridot (Zabarjad)

Peridot is the main emerald substitute, and much of it comes from Pakistan's northern areas. Green agate and green tourmaline are also named as Mercury substitutes. Substitutes are traditionally milder, and many people wear them without a reading.

How emerald is traditionally worn

  • Finger: the little finger.
  • Metal: gold or silver.
  • Day: first worn on a Wednesday morning.

The stone is usually rinsed in clean water before first wear and set so it touches the skin.

What to check when buying

  • Ask whether the emerald has been oiled or resin-filled, which is common and should be disclosed.
  • Watch for green glass and synthetic emerald; round gas bubbles point to glass.
  • For peridot, an olive-to-lime green with a slightly oily shine is normal.
  • Ask for independent lab testing on a valuable stone. See how we check every stone.

Budget

Peridot and green agate are easy to compare in the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters. Emerald of good colour and astrological weight is more likely to appear in 20,000 to 50,000 and Over 50,000.

Care

Avoid heat, steam and ultrasonic cleaners, which can draw oil out of an emerald. Peridot scratches more easily than sapphire, so store it separately. See our gemstone care guide.
