Scorpio Gemstones: Red Coral (Marjan) and Red Agate برج عقرب
In short: The traditional Scorpio stone is red coral (Marjan, also called Moonga), because Scorpio, called Vrishchik in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Mars, and it shares this stone with Aries. The common substitute is red agate (carnelian), traditionally considered milder. Red coral is traditionally worn on the ring finger in gold or copper from a Tuesday morning.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
Primary stone: red coral (Moonga)
Mars (Mangal) is the planet of energy, courage, property and siblings in the tradition, and red coral is its gem. Coral ranges from orange-red to deep ox-blood; many buyers prefer an even red with a smooth polish. See our red coral stones.
Secondary stone: red agate
Red agate (carnelian, or surkh Aqeeq) is the substitute for coral and is traditionally milder. Red jasper is also named. For Aqeeq in other colours, browse Aqeeq.
How red coral is traditionally worn
- Finger: the ring finger.
- Metal: gold or copper.
- Day: first worn on a Tuesday morning.
Coral is often cut as a triangle or oval for rings. Most readings keep it apart from blue sapphire (Neelam).
What to check when buying
- Dye is the most common problem; colour sitting in cracks or pits is a sign of dyeing.
- Plastic and glass imitations feel light or show bubbles.
- Natural coral shows fine parallel growth lines along its length.
- Our 7-day return policy gives you time to have the stone checked before it is set.

Budget
Red agate is easy to find in the Under 5,000 filter. For red coral of astrological weight, compare stones in the 5,000 to 20,000 and 20,000 to 50,000 filters.
Care
Coral is soft and reacts to acids, so keep it away from lemon, vinegar, perfume and household cleaners. Wipe it after wearing. See our gemstone care guide.
